COLD SPRING AFTER ACTION REPORT
SIR:

In obedience to Orders, I have the honor to submit the following report of the actions of the 44th Georgia, Company C., during September 14 – 15 inclusive, the year present. Captain Mallette arrived in the Village of Cold Spring during the afternoon of the 13th and was on premises in the area near the Ice Cream Parlor adjacent to an artillery unit.

Throughout the afternoon and evening troops continued their arrivals and by Saturday morning the Company had expanded to include enough rifles to attract the attention of a small contingent of Union soldiers that was garrisoned in a camp nearby.

Arising Sunday morning and finding that there were no Church Services in the Village I conducted a service of my own reciting the144th Psalm : Praise be to the Lord, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.

Around 1 PM the Regiment was called to form up. Skirmishers were deployed and approached the enemy forces occupying the areas from the Dennisville Inn to the Blacksmith Shop. We formed a column of fours and advanced along the road past the Bakery firing and dividing our forces.in our advance.

After several volleys we split our forces and I took shelter along the south side of the Bakery firing around the corner then moving to allow another to do the same while I loaded. Hearing the reports of gunfire from our left those of us alongside the Bakery deployed to the rear of the bakery and took cover behind trees and any other obstacles that might provide us cover. The rebel forces on our left held the upper and in their skirmish with those forces on the Union right flank.

Due to the dominance of our southern troops many a blue soldier fell that afternoon, a truce was requested ending the confrontation and we returned, victorious in our effort, to our camp. Having carried the day we broke camp and headed to our homes.

Gentlemen of the 44th, let us bask in our victory, until we again hear the call β€œTo Arms !”.

Respectfully submitted, Corporal Jim Marshall, 44th Georgia Vol. Inf, Co. C, ANV.
