In Memorium - On leave of Absence - Major Clark J. Van Buskirk - Honoring the memory of Major James W. Beck.
Born on October 23, 1831, in Wilkes County, Georgia, he was the son of Rev. T. J. Beck. He enlisted in Company B of the 2nd Georgia and was elected Captain in the 44th Georgia. He was promoted to Major for distinguished service on the battlefield. He fought at Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Later, he was promoted to Colonel and led the 44th until the war's conclusion. In 1853, he married Margaret Willis, and they had three children: Marcus W., Lenore, and Walter L. After the war, he became a College President. He was also a Royal Arch Mason.

He was 38 years old when he enter the 44th as a 2nd Lieutenant, on March 17, 1862.
Promoted 1st Lieut. July 15, 1862, he was elected Captain on July 15, 1862 this was the
same day when his friend; Colonel Lumpkin become commanding officer of the
44th. He was born Jan. 5, 1824 Died at home in Kerkwood DeKalb County Ga. On Monday Jan.2,
1899. When the war started he ownd a farm in Watkinsville Ga. He was wounded at Sharpsburg
on Sept. 17, 1862, again at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 he lost his right arm. The same ball
that took his arm also hit the Colonel in the leg. He was take prisoner on July 11 1863 with
the medical wagons on there way back to Virginia He was held at Johnson's Island till the end
of the war. He was Paroled on Aug. 18 1865 in Watkinsville, Ga. He was born Jan 5, 1824.
His father was William, and Mother was Mary Polly Stroud. His Father had died and his mother
own the Farm in 1860 valued at $12,500, she had personal value of $9600. She died in 1868. At the
start of the war he own land in 1860 value at $2000 and had person value of
$2500.

1st. Sergeant Rick Sasor -Honoring the memory of
Sergeant Joseph H. McRee
He was 34 years old when he enter the
44th as 1st Corporal, March 17, 1862. Wounded at Gettysburg Pa., and again at
Fort Steadman Va. Promoted 1st Sergeant. Served through the war. The son of Thomas and Frances McRee
Born in July 14, 1828 Died Aug. 8 1906 Watkinsville, Clarke County he was capenter by trade.
Owned his home value at $1100.00, he married April 10, 1851 to Susan F. Elder McRee born 1832,
they had a son Orlando 1852, and daughters Tallulah 1855, and Naomi 1858. after the war they had
3 more children. In 1903 he was living in Decatur Ga.

2nd Sergeant Ken Doran - Honoring the memory of
2nd Sergeant William H. Bishop
He was 32 years old when he enter the 44th as a private,
March 17, 1862. Wounded at Gettysburg Pa. Promoted 2nd Sergeant Captured at Spottsylvania,
Va. Released 1865. Was born 1830 Married Elizabeth born 1831 in 1851 Rebbeca was born 1852,
and James in 1858 he was a butcher at this time of his life, he could not read or write
in 1860. After the war his wife had died and remarried Malinda learned
to read and write an they had a son William in 1867 became a policeman in
the Town of Bibb Georgia were he lived in 1880. In 1903 He was living in Bishop Georgia.

1st Corporal Michael Lordi - Honoring the memory of Private William Pulnot
He was 26 years old when he enter the 44th as a private. May 7, 1862.
Wounded at Gettysburg Pa. Surrendered at Appomattox, Va. He was born on Feb 1836 in Clarke
coungty Ga. At the start of the war he was working on his Mother Mary Poulnott Farm.He married Susan
in 1859 they had a daughter Ween Ann in 1867 and returned to farming but did not own the land any more.
For some unknown reason his name got change from Poulnott In 1903 he was living in Oconee County Ga.

2nd Corporal James Marshall - Honoring the memory of 3rd Corporal Calvin A. Dicken
Calvin Aldolphus Dicken enlisted in the 44th Regiment as a 5th Corporal at the age of 18 on March 17, 1862. He later advanced to the rank of 3rd Corporal. During the Civil War, he was captured at Spottsylvania, Virginia, on May 19, 1864, and was released in 1865. Born in 1846 to Richard Ballard Dicken, a blacksmith, and his wife Mahala, Calvin was a resident of Clarke County, Georgia. Following the war, he worked as a farm laborer, remained unmarried, and passed away before 1880.

3rd Corporal/Brevit Lt. Paul Downey honoring the memory of Private Alfred L. Beavers.,
Alfred L. Beavers enlisted as a private in the 44th Regiment at the age of 34 on August 30, 1862. He was captured near Front Royal, Virginia, in 1863 and subsequently released in 1865. Born in 1828 in Pike County, Georgia, to John and Elizabeth Beavers, Alfred's father was a blacksmith. He married Mary Ann Word on February 3, 1850, in Upson, Georgia. Before the war, Alfred worked as a laborer. After the war, he and his family relocated to Tarrant, Texas, where they purchased a farm. Together, they had two children.

March 4, 1862. Appointed Ordnance Sergeant November 4, 1862. Surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, April 9, 1865. Died in Macon County, Georgia.

Gilmer A. Tiller
He was 23 years old when he enter the 44th as a private, May 7, 1862.
Captured in Pennsylvania, He was 25 years old when he died in prison. Born in Clarke county in 1839
the oldest son of Elisla and Lencey Tiller he had 2 sisters and brother, worked on his father farm
before the war

Private Ben Lanza - Honoring the memory of Private

was 33 years old when he joined the 44th as a private, November 7, 1863
Wounded near Richmound Va., Captured and died in the prison. He was born 1829 in Watkensville, Oconne
county Ga. 1860 he is married to Julia and they have 4 children on there farm.

Private Mark Oettinger - Honoring the memory of Private Charles Sanders
Charles Sanders enlisted as a private in the 44th on May 7, 1862, at the age of 22. He was wounded at Spotsylvania, Virginia. Born in 1840 in Clarke County, he was the son of Silas and Polly Sanders; his father worked as a factory guard. By 1860, Charles himself was employed as a factory worker. He married Ann, and together they had three children. At that time, he worked as a miller. Charles Sanders passed away at home in 1897.

Private Dan Boyer - Honoring the memory of Private Nathaniel H. Hewell
Nat H. Hewell was born in 1832 in Clarke County, Georgia. At the age of 30, he enlisted as a private in the 44th regiment on March 17, 1862. Unfortunately, due to disability, he was discharged on October 18, 1862. By 1860, Nat was married to Cathleen, and they had three children together while managing a farm. Following the war, the couple expanded their family with four more children, and Nat worked as a laborer. He passed away by 1880.

Private Kevin Downey - Honoring the memory of Private James W. Davenport
James W. Davenport was born in 1841 in Clarke County, Georgia, on the farm of his parents, Moses and Mary Davenport. At the age of 21, he enlisted as a private in the 44th Regiment on March 17, 1862. He was wounded during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, and later transferred to the Confederate States Navy in 1864, where he served until the end of the war. After the conflict, James returned to the family farm and married Sally. Together, they had two children. By 1903, the Davenport family was residing in Athens, Georgia.

Private Paul J. Downey, Jr. - Honoring the memory of Private William L. Biggs
William L. Biggs enlisted as a private in the 44th Regiment on March 17, 1862, at the young age of 15. He was the younger brother of James Biggs. During the war, he was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, and later surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia. Born in 1847 in Clarke County, Georgia, he was the son of Elizabeth Biggs and grew up on her farm. After the war, William moved to Limestone, Texas, where he worked as a farmer and boarded in the home of David Matthews. By 1903, he had returned to live in Oconee County, Georgia.

Private Robert Howley - Honoring the memory of Private Augustus C. Osburn
Augustus C. Osburn was born in 1835 in Buncombe, Clarke County, Georgia. Before the war, he worked as a farm laborer, as recorded in the 1860 census. At the age of 27, he enlisted as a private in the 44th Regiment on May 7, 1862. During his service, he was wounded at Ellison's Mill, Virginia, but continued to serve through the duration of the war. By 1903, he was living in Oconee County, Georgia.

He was 20 years old when he enter the 44th as a private. March 17, 1862
Wounded at Cedar Creek and Petersburg Va. Captured at Spotsylvania, Va. Released 1865. He was born in 1842
in Clarke county, Ga. Like his Brother he was working on his Mother Mary Pulnot farm. He married Martha
and had a son Walter born 1875, return to work on the Farm after the war In 1903 he lived in Bishop Ga.

He was 26 years old when he joined the 44th as a private, March 17, 1862.
Captured at Spotsylvania, Va. Released 1865. Was born 1836 in Walkinsville Ga. The son of Preacher
Bedford Langford and Mary Langford. After the war he married Elizabeth and they had Aurther 1868,
Walter 1872, Mime 1874 and Eva 1878. He owned a hardware store in 1880 in Atlanta Ga. he moved
back Clarke county in 1895 1903 he is living in Clarke county Ga.

He was 20 years old when he joined the 44th as a private on
March 17, 1862. Promoted 4TH Corporal. Captured at Spottsylvania, Va., May 10,
1864. Released after the surrender. He was born in 1842 on the farm of his
father Daniel, and Minevia in Clarke county Ga. In 1880 he was a convict Guard
in Green Ga. He had lost his wife. In 1903 he was living in Oconee county Ga.

William Whitehead
He was 26 years old when he joined the 44th GA as a Private on May 7, 1862. Promoted to 3rd Sergeant.
Lost a leg at Wilderness, VA. Discharged on account of wound.
Born in 1836, the son of Daniel and Anna Whitehead on there farm near Athens, GA.
He married Sarah and they had daughter Jane in 1862. After the war they had 4 more children and moved to a farm in Jackson, GA.
He worked and lived on Mr Asken's farm in 1880. In 1910 he and his wife lived in Hall, GA.
